Herbert Brookhart, 90

Herbert Wayne Brookhart, 90, of Wapakoneta, died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born June 9, 1921, in Auglaize County, the son of Ethel (Burnfield) and Dorwin Brookhart. On April 14, 1946, he married Betty A. Hixenbaugh, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Dennis (Cheryl) Brookhart, of Dallas, Texas, Roger Brookhart, of Charlotte, N.C., Gordon (Tammy) Brookhart, of Westerville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Cecil and Ralph Walther.
A 1939 graduate of Buckland High School, Wayne attended Northwestern School of Commerce, where he studied accounting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and served during World War II in the Middle East Theater and the European Theater. He worked for the Lima Locomotive Works, North Star Woolen Mills, White Chevrolet, and served as general manager of the Koneta Rubber Co., Wapakoneta. He also served as an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Wapakoneta. A 50-year member of the Hamer Lodge 167, Free & Accepted Masons, Wapakoneta, he was also a member of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton. He enjoyed attending his family sporting events, golfing, and doing accounting and taxes.
Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, State Route 501, Wapakoneta, with the Rev. Joe Pumphrey officiating. Burial is to follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta VFW, Post 8445.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
