Golf carts, not cars to carry court

Convertibles used to transport the Wapakoneta High School court around the football field in the past are being replaced by golf carts.
“In the past, the homecoming court has paraded around the track in convertible cars to kick off the homecoming ceremonies,” said teacher Julie Courter, who advises Student Senate, which organizes homecoming. “This year, the court will participate in the parade using golf carts.”
The change was made due to the recent resurfacing of the track, which was finished late this summer. If cars were driven on the track, which circles the field at Harmon Stadium, it would void the warranty.
“The track is new and is still under warranty,” Wapakoneta City Schools Superintendent Keith Horner told the Wapakoneta Daily News. “While we don’t think any cars will damage the track, the installer made it clear that the warranty would be voided if the track is damaged by the vehicles. Due to that, we have decided to not use cars this year.”
Golf carts carrying members of the homecoming court, including three senior girls and one from each grade of underclassmen as well as their escorts, are expected to enter the gate to the field to make their way around the track beginning at 6:50 p.m. prior to Friday night’s game against the Celina Bulldogs, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The queen is to be crowned at 7 p.m.
Courter said the queen and her court are to have special seating for the game, located on a stage by the student section.
New Beginnings and The Pumpkin Patch donated items to decorate the stage while the Wapakoneta Country Club is donating the golf carts.
This year’s homecoming theme is “Masquerade” and the dance is scheduled from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the high school. Presale tickets may be bought at lunch for $5 or for $7 at the door.
