As workers near the end of phase one of the East Auglaize Street reconstruction project, members of the Wapakoneta City Council Streets and Alleys Committee met Thursday with officials from the city engineer’s office to view the progress.
“We are pleased with the progress,” said Dan Graf, committee chairman. “The features included are time-tested and should last a long time. The architectural features that are being used are pleasing to the eye. We couldn’t be happier.”
Mary Ruck and Andy Beane from the city engineer’s office walked with the committee and briefly updated them on the progress of the $2.7 million project, which is scheduled for an Oct. 16 completion date.
Ruck said after workers were done for the day on Thursday, the street would be opened farther east to Seltzer Street.
Beane added that the street would have to be closed briefly again later as final touches are made to the project.
The committee discussed the possibility of making the Seltzer-East Auglaize streets intersection a four-way stop once work is completed, but if a traffic light is put back in, the committee plans to recommend that arm posts be put in rather than the existing traffic light, which hangs on wire. Ruck added that 81 “plain” trees will be put in while 78 are being taken out, giving the street a net gain of three trees. Planters also are to be placed down the side of the street.
“We can just walk through and visualize the trees and planters and visualize how beautiful it is going to be,” Ruck said.
The remainder of the street from Seltzer down to County Road 25A is to remain closed as the project continues.
