FOOTBALL: 'Skins in playoffs, 7th in state poll

October 25, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team clinched a playoff berth with its 41-14 win over the Shawnee Indians on Friday.
According to the Web site joeeitel.com, which tracks the Harbin computer points, the Redskins are unofficially fifth in Division II, region 8.
The top eight teams in each region qualify. The top four teams get to play their opening round games at home.
Wapak can clinch a home game with a win Friday night against Kenton. A win would guarantee the Redskins either a third- or fourth-place finish in the points, depending on what other teams in the region do.
The lowest Wapak could finish with a loss is seventh.
“We talked to our kids about the playoffs from Game 6 on,” Wapak coach Doug Frye said. “Prior to that you’re just trying to build and have a winning season.
“It used to be, when I was a younger coach, I said, well, we’re not going to talk about that. That’s on the back burner. But by golly the kids are bombarded with it. They read it in the newspaper and on the Internet sites. So I think as a smart coach you at least have to address it with your kids. You can go overboard with it. But you have to at least address it.”
Mathematically, it is still possible that the Redskins could lose and still finish fourth and play at home.
The OHSAA will release the official numbers on its Web site — ohsaa.org — this afternoon.
The Redskins remained seventh in the latest Associated Press Division II state poll, released Monday. Wapak received two first-place votes.
Division II and Division V are the only two divisions that still have nine unbeaten teams remaining.
