FOOTBALL: Fans should find plenty of seating

November 8, 2011

After finding slim pickings on seating last Friday, fans will have an easier go of it this week.

The Wapakoneta Redskins’ Division II football regional semifinal game at 7:30 Friday night against the Trotwood-Madison Rams will be played at Alexander Field in Piqua, one of the more fan-friendly stadiums in the region.

The stadium, located on the campus of Piqua High School just east of Interstate 75, is a modern facility that seats 8,500 — 4,500 on the home side and 4,000 on the visitor side — according to the school’s Web site.

Parking is plentiful, too, with more than 3,000 paved parking spaces.

Pre-game ticket sales for last Friday’s first-round game at Franklin were sluggish, with just 1,000 tickets sold prior to the game. Speculation surrounded around the fact that Franklin’s Atrium Stadium had just 850 seats on the visitors’ side. The long drive to the city just south of Dayton may have also played a role.

Despite the slow sales, Wapak fans were lined from the south gate of the stadium, around the corner and down the east side the full length of the field when the gates opened at 6.

Tickets fro Friday night’s game against Trotwood go on sale from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday football players and cheerleaders in grades 9-12, their parents, band parents and reserved football season ticket holders.

On Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, they will be available for students and staff.

Sales to the general public will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

Trotwood-Madison is 11-0 and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the state in Division II.
