BOTKINS — Cameron Flora and Chloe Flora are having virtually identical success in 2013 during their sophomore years.

The twins’ respective cross country teams qualified for the regional meet last Saturday after districts.
Cameron and Chloe earned placed third overall in their respective Shelby County Athletic League meets Oct. 12.

They were each third individually at districts also.

Cameron described what he believes Chloe’s strengths are as a competitive runner.

“She is confident at the start,” Cameron said. “She runs to win, whereas she’s not satisfied with second or third. She wants to be at the start from the gun.

“That’s a good strategy,” he said.

Chloe answered the same question about Cameron.

“He’s really good at pacing,” Chloe said. “I would go out too fast. He’s stays out there and keeps his pace pretty well.”

The twins rarely train together before and during the cross country season but since the postseason rosters are currently limited to seven runners, there’s a little more time to train together.

The Trojans boys cross country program will be appearing its second straight regional meet Saturday, and third total in four years.

“I’ve been happy with our season,” Cameron said. “We’ve been training well.”

“There’s going to be a lot of wind Saturday,” he said. “I’ll probably hang on to somebody and let them break up the wind for me. I’ll run the last mile really hard.”

Botkins was third at districts last season, among the top-four qualifying teams.

Last season the Botkins girls cross country was one slot shy of qualifying for regionals. This season the girls slipped into the fourth and final spot at districts in order to qualify to the regional meet.

Chloe did, however, reach regionals in 2012 as a freshman by placing 10th at districts, needing a top-16 effort to be a regional qualifier as an individual.

So this season, she will again be racing at regionals but with all of her teammates as well.

“It’s been a good year,” Chloe said. “I just want to move on Saturday. That’s all I really care about.”

Botkins also qualified for regionals in 2010 and 2011, the two seasons before Chloe entered high school.

The Botkins boys and girls teams will compete in the Region 12 cross country meet Saturday, attempting to qualify for the state championships.

Cameron and Chloe each found success during track and field earlier this year in the spring as freshmen.
Cameron was seventh at districts in the 3200-meter run.

Chloe placed fifth in the 800-meter run at regionals last season and was fewer than two seconds shy of the fourth-place finisher, the final state qualifier.

She was also part of Botkins’ regional qualifying 4x400 relay team.
