“Probably the most successful ever.”
Those were the final words 2012 Summer Moon Festival chairman Josh Steinke used to describe this year’s event, held Wednesday through Sunday.
“We likely had record attendance,” Steinke said. “The weather was cooperative. All of the ride vendors and food vendors said sales were up from last year.”
This year feature lager beer, Old Vienna Lager, was sold out by 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, Steinke said. A total of eight kegs had been made for the festival.
Events began Wednesday with the Miss Summer Moon Scholarship Pagaent, which was won by Wapakoneta High School senior Mindy Kiefer.
Some of the top events Thursday included Chamber Business Hours, the annual bed races, and the beer stein holding contest. The contest was also held both Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the annual car show again brought huge crowds.
On Saturday, the Run to the Moon drew 680 runners. Events such as the RC Fun Run, the talent show, and the weiner dog races also drew huge crowds.
“We had a record number of teams for the bed races,” Steinke said. “Many other events had record attendance. The Run to the Moon was great with 680 people running. We sold out of the lager beer and all of the vendros were saying they were up from last year.”
A volleyball tournament and ladies and men’s vintage baseball games were among Sunday’s highlights.
Steinke said it is hard to track exact attendance for the event, but that it was hard to doubt this year’s weekend was the biggest ever.
Steinke said a Christian Rock Concert held at the waterpark Gazebo and a popular performance by local group Staples in the free entertainment tent also were popular and contributed to a high turnout.
