Fans sport pink at games

October 2, 2012

Students dress in pink attire in the past to cheer on the Wapakoneta High School football team. The Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters are selling pink t-shirts to wear at upcoming sporting events to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Local students and fans will be wearing pink during sporting events this week and next week all for one cause — to raise awareness for breast cancer.

With October being breast cancer awareness month, the Wapakoneta Redskins will host a soccer, a volleyball and a football game, and the fans can dress up in pink, by purchasing a t-shirt through the Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters, to wear for these games.

This is the second year Wapakoneta has participated in this type of fundraiser.

“Last year, we were approached by the Spielman Foundation and we thought this was a good idea,” Wapakoneta Athletic Director Brad Rex said. “The principal (Aaron Rex) and I got together and decided this was a great idea because so many people in our community are affected by cancer, especially breast cancer.”

This year, all of the proceeds raised from the Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters pink t-shirt sale will benefit local charities.

The t-shirts are pink, and on the front says “Tougher than Cancer” and on the back, it will say “Go Skins.”

They plan to sell t-shirts this week during lunch hours along with upcoming Wapakoneta sporting events.

On Monday, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team took on the Van Wert Cougars, and pink shirts were donned at that game in recognition for breast cancer.

Today at the home volleyball match against the St. Marys Roughriders, the pink t-shirts will be worn again, and on Friday, Oct. 12, the Wapakoneta Redskins football team will take on Van Wert, and pink t-shirts will be worn in support of this special cause.

Time to think pink and time to wear pink.
