Donald Shade, 83

Donald Franklin Shade, 83, of Lima, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at Wyngate Senior Living Community in Lima.
He was born May 15, 1929, in Waynesfield, the son of Lawuire (Hardin) and Walter Dean Shade, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 15, 1948, he married Gladys L. (Rex) Shade, and she preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2007.
Surviving are three sons, Randall (Lori) Shade, of Lima, Roger (Linda) Shade, of Wapakoneta, and Tom (Colleen) Shade, of Canal Fulton; two sisters-in-law, Jenny Rex, of Lima, and Rhea (Roger) Bechdal, of Lima; and five grandchildren, Meghan Shade, Lucas Shade, Nathan Shade, Brandon Shade, and Bridget Shade.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Dale (Mary) Shade, Paul (Mary Jo) Shade, aand Glenn (Beverly) Shade; in-laws Chester and Marcine (Hanley) Rex; a sister-in-law, Peggy Ann (Stan) Wirt; and a brother-in-law, Bobby Rex.
He was a 1947 graduate of Harrod High School, where he played basketball and led the team to the county championship. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Harrod Christian Church. He loved spending winters together with his wife in Lakeland, Fla., and competing in the Polk County, Fla. Senior Olympics, where he won many medals.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation, Eastside Chapel, in Lima, with the Rev. Gary Rummel officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Westminster Cemetery in Westminster.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association in Lima.
