CROSS COUNTRY: Martin finishes first-team all league

October 17, 2012

OTTAWA —  Elizabeth Martin qualified for first-team all Western Buckeye League at the league meet Saturday in Ottawa.

Held in Ottawa’s Memorial Park, the Wapakoneta girls finished in 8th place at the meet, and the boys finished in 6th place.

The top 11 finishers in the race earn first-team honors, and Martin said she was happy to reach her season goal, finishing in 10th at 20:58.

“I was trying to just stay up with the leaders, I knew that Top 11 was first-team (all-league) and that was my goal this season. At the finish I knew I was near that margin,” Martin said.

Martin said she had a good race, and an especially good finish.

“The pace was really fast when I was up there with the leaders. I lost a couple spots around the second mile, but was able to get a few back at the finish,” Martin said.

Martin knew where she stood coming down the home stretch, and needed to finish strong.

“I was trying to just stay up with the leaders, I knew that Top 11 was first-team (all-league) and that was my goal this season. At the finish I knew I was near that margin,” Martin said.

Martin said even though it is an individual honor, she shares it with her teammates.

“We just go out there and have a lot of fun,” Martin said. “It’s like a big family.”

Senior Michael Greer finished first for the Redskin boys, 27th overall in the race at 17:46.

“It’s actually by best for this season,” Greer said. “Near the middle of the race it started to get a little painful because of the pace I was going at.”

Greer said support from teammates helped him have a strong finish.

“I had encouragement from my coach and teammates, and they gave me motivation to finish hard, finish strong,” Greer said.
