Clarence U. Barhorst, 79
Clarence U. Barhorst, 79, of Botkins, died at 4:33 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney. He was born April 15, 1934, in Minster, the son of August and Mary (Herbert) Barhorst, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Shirley A. Nuss, and she died Nov. 27, 1998.
Survivors include, five children, Darlene (Terry) Lampert, Botkins, Karen (Rick) Ramey, Wapakoneta, Susan (Lee) Scott, Wapakoneta, Randy (Laurie) Barhorst, Wapakoneta and Brian Barhorst, New Bremen; seven grandchildren, Heather (Isaiah) Johnson, Brent Ramey, Austin Scott, Adam Scott, Sherri (Justin) Rogers, Jodi (Dustin) Hurley and Conner Barhorst; eight great-grandchildren, Haylee Johnson, Kaiden, Keegen and Kayleigh Rogers, Blaine, Ian, Gavin and Korbin Hurley; siblings, Clarrisa Brinkman, Kansas City, Mo., Doris Bruggeman, Maria Stein, Delores Bruggeman, Maria Stein, Marilyn (Ralph) Meyer, Coldwater, Emily Subler, Frenchtown, Martha (Richard) Subler, New Bremen, Joseph (Wilma) Barhorst, Philothea, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Lavern Schmidt, Celina, Ivo Braun, Portland, Ind., Ed Rethman, Sidney, Thomas (Sharon) Nuss, Sidney; sisters-in-law, Clarissa Barhorst, Russia, Ohio and Carol (Wilfred) Prenger, Minster; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Charlene Schmidt, Eloise Braun and Marjorie Rethman; a brother, Herbert Barhorst, and three brothers-in-law, Virgil Bruggeman, Warner Bruggeman and Jack Subler.
Clarence retired in 1978 as a service repairman with Harry’s Paint Shop- Paul Wilt Homes, Botkins. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Botkins, and a life member of the K of C, Council #1272, Wapakoneta. He was a member of the Botkins Volunteer Fire Dept., and formerly served on the Botkins City Council. He also volunteered with the Civil Defense.
An avid Cincinnati Reds fan, he enjoyed tinkering, fixing things and collecting hats. Clarence supported his grandchildren by attending their sporting events and other activities.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating. Burial is to follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Botkins. The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, and 9-9:45 a.m. Wednesday, at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, state Route 501, Wapakoneta.
A fireman memorial service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Botkins Volunteer Fire Dept.
