Carl Serr, 84

Carl Ludwig Serr, 84, of rural Wapakoneta, passed away peacefully at 7:44 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born June 25, 1928, in Auglaize County, the son of Sophia (Metz) and Otto Serr, who are deceased.
On June 29, 1952, he married Phyllis (Finley) Serr, and she survives. Phyllis and Carl and celebrated 60 years of marriage together.
Three children were born to this union, Karen (Richard) Hatfield, of Wapakoneta, Connie (Wayne) Schneider, of Botkins, and Carl (Mindy) Serr, of Wapakoneta. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Chris Hatfield, Allison Hatfield, Ryan (Kara) Schneider, Shawn (Andrea) Schneider, Jackson Serr and Leah Serr; three great-grandchildren, Makenzie Schneider, Lydia Schneider and Kelsey Schneider; and his youngest brother, Ernest (Beverly) Serr, of Texas.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathaniel Scott Hatfield, a daughter-in-law, Megan (Peachey) Serr; and six siblings, Leona (Gilbert) Schumann, Hulda Serr, Margaret Serr, Herman (Katharine) Serr, Willis (Ruth) Serr, and Edison (Rosemary) Serr.
He attended Botkins School until his junior year and graduated from Jackson Center High School in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1951.
Carl retired in 1994 after 26 years of service with the U. S. Postal Service where he worked as a letter carrier and window clerk. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Botkins, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was also a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3316 in Jackson Center and the American Legion, Heiland Post 446 in Anna.
Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid antique collector and loved to attend auctions.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Botkins, with the Rev. Bob Carter officiating. Burial is to follow in the Loramie Valley Cemetery in Botkins, where military rites will be conducted.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Contributions may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church or to the Carl and Phyllis Serr Family Scholarship (Botkins Local School).
