Acheson shot an 80 for the round and tied for 14th place out of 60 golfers.
“It’s not bad considering the it’s only the second time playing the course and first time in tournament conditions,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said.
Acheson started with a par, bogey, par, then pulled his drive into the heather on No. 4. It took him two hits to get out and he ended up with a double bogey.
He got a bogey on 5 followed by a three-putt bogey on 6, before parring holes 7 through 10.
On No. 11 he flew the green on his approach shot and ended up with a bogey. Acheson fought back on holes 12 through 16 by parring all of them.
On the par-five No. 17, Acheson picked up his first birdie of the day to get to even on the back nine.
But then he pulled his drive into the heather on No. 18, couldn’t find his ball and ended up with a triple bogey.
Acheson finished with a 41 front and 39 back for an 80.
“I’m proud how Caleb grinded out throughout the round,” Wayman said. “He had a few opportunities that slipped away and a few hiccups on the front nine but fought back on the back nine to make it very interesting.”
Only the top two individuals not on an advancing team qualified for the state tournament. The two individual qualifiers were Norwalk’s Dustin Lieber with a 72 and Avon Lake’s Brenan Aussmen with a 74.
Many golfers in the field struggled with the pin placements. Only 13 golfers shot in the 70’s.
“There were a lot of three and four putts happening around the golf course,” Wayman said.
Teams that advanced to the state tournament were Fremont Ross and Findlay.
