The 2013 âCitizen of the Yearâ title was awarded to a local woman for her many demonstrations of leadership throughout the community, including the generous act of donating a vital organ to someone in need.
Joyce Borgert was presented as âCitizen of the Yearâ during Thursdayâs Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce Community Awards banquet.Â
Friend and kidney recipient Steve Archer said Borgertâs first reaction to his need for a kidney transplant was to ask âwhat do you have to do to be a donor?â
âSheâs really a giving person,â Archer said. âThere was never any hesitation.â
Archer was on dialysis waiting for a donor, and he said Borgertâs offer to donate a kidney was âlife-changing.â
âI was living off machines,â Archer said. âI would have died. Now I can live a normal life.âÂ
Borgert was named 2013 Citizen of the Year for her dedication and leadershipin many aspects of the community.
âShe was always promoting and helping children with mental and developmental disabilities,â incoming Chamber President Josh Little said while presenting Borgert with the award.Â
