BOE reviews details of new school

December 13, 2012

BOTKINS — Botkins Local Schools Board of Education members Wednesday reviewed several details concerning the new school scheduled to be built in the community.

Closing date for the property purchase is scheduled for Dec. 21, and zoning for the property will be finalized in January.

Building plan approvals will be sent on Friday, while all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permits have been filed. A review was done on the dust collection system at the current school and it has been determined the existing system will not be moved. A new system for the new school will be bid out.

As things begin to fall into place, Superintendent Connie Schneider said the goal is for bid documents to go out at the end of January.

“Everything is beginning to fall in place,” Schneider said.

Board members also reviewed several samples of bricks to be used to build the school, and they looked at the possible color schemes and textures.

Board members also reviewed a possible entry point for visitors to the school with the school to be officially locked at 8:15 a.m. each day.

The current design could potentially produce problems for visitors being held in a “holding pen” without being able to gain entry if someone is not in the office. A potential solution discussed was setting the secretary’s office in a “reception” room, who can allow approved visitors to get where they need to go.

Schneider said they are hopeful that groundbreaking could be in April 2013.

Botkins Local School District residents approved a 7.99-mill property tax levy in November 2011 to build a new school and provide money to maintain those facilities for a maximum of 35 years.

The bond levy raised the approximate $6.9 million local share of the $24.4 million total project.
