Board approves coach contracts
WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Board of Education approved the supplemental contracts of two new head coaches for the 2014-15 school year during a regular board meeting Monday night.
The board approved Jack Hayzlett as the boys head varsity basketball coach and Nathan Swaney as the girls head varsity basketball coach.
The contracts of several other coaches for next school year were also accepted, including James Hennon as varsity cross country coach, Keaton Fetter as the junior high football coach, Jake Spencer as assistant junior high football coach, Scott Baumgardner as junior high volleyball coach and Jocelyn Weeks as volunteer assistant cross country coach.
In response to the proposed removal of the words “thorough and efficient” from the Ohio Constitution’s description of its system of public education, the board voted in strong opposition of the removal of these words from Article VI, section two of the Ohio Constitution.
“The constitutional provision requiring the General Assembly to secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools has held the State of Ohio to a high standard for over 160 years,” the board said in a statement.
W-G Superintendent Chris Pfister said he doesn’t understand why anyone would want to remove those words from the Ohio Constitution.
“Today, it’s absolutely critical we have a thorough and efficient system of public schools in Ohio,” he said. “They want to remove those words from the Ohio Constitution and I just don’t get it. I don’t know why anyone would be opposed to having a thorough and efficient public education system.”
