MINSTER—Heading into Thursday night's ACME sectional showdown with the New Knoxville Rangers, the Wapakoneta Redskins had a lopsided 9-0 win to their credit and the top seed in the six-team tourney.
When Thursday's game ended, it was clear Rangers starter Jake Lawler didn't get that memo.
In a pitching performance that can only be described as a gem, Lawler gave up two hits and struck out 14 in a 10-0 New Knoxville win.
"Jake Lawler had a great pitching performance," New Knoxville ACME coach Clark Froning said. "He can make a coach look pretty good."

At least that's the message they sent last weekend.
In the 2009 USAW Junior Freestyle National Dual wrestling competition, a collection of some of the best wrestlers in the state, including a Wapakoneta High School junior, took home first place overall, a shiny new trophy and gold medals.

Last Friday, Brian Garman was in uncharted territory.
And for someone as accomplished as the former Wapakoneta High School baseball standout, that's saying something.
With a final count of 83 pitches—53 for strikes—the left-handed junior from the University of Cincinnati completed his first-ever start for the Brainerd Lake Area Lunkers of the Northwoods league, located in Brainerd Minnesota.

Walked away at sectionals: Bases loaded pass gives Van Wert comeback win over Wapak Jr. ACME

Van Wert players celebrate after scoring the game-winning run Tuesday.

CONVOY — One more out.
That’s all the Wapakoneta Redskins Junior ACME baseball team needed Tuesday to advance to the Crestview sectional finals.
One more out meant Van Wert was heading home early and that Wapak was going to get another crack at the host Crestview Knights, this time in the final game of the tournament.
One more out meant Wapak would have bounced all the way back from a last at-bat loss to Crestview Sunday to advance to the next level of postseason competition.
But, sometimes, that final out can be the most difficult to secure out of the bunch. And Tuesday, it was not meant to be for the Redskins.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Van Wert designated hitter Terrin Contreras showed nerves of steel at the plate, drawing a game-winning walk off reliever A.J. Etzkorn. What had started as a 3-2 Wapak lead became a 4-3 loss and an end to the Jr. ACME season.
