By WILLIAM LANEY Managing Editor The night the lights will go out in Wapakoneta — Oct. 10. At midnight, Oct. 10, the main electrical power line into the city will be disconnected — leaving Wapakoneta, in a darkness not witnessed since the Jan. 5, 2005, ice storm left the area without power. This time the power outage is planned. This time the outage should last hours and not days.

Health Dept. can't buy Centennial |

By JENNIFER TANGEMAN Staff Writer Auglaize County Health Department officials have given up their hopes of purchasing the old Centennial Elementary School grounds for relocation, a county administrator says. Auglaize County Health Board members decided to pursue purchasing 2.5 acres from Wapakoneta City Schools after an executive session last week. They wanted to purchase the former site of Centennial Elementary School on Water Street.

Lawnmower derby now an annual success |

By CARLA MEYER Staff Writer Wapakoneta area resident Jeremy Resor’s best friend Chad Kantner had a dream of one day hosting a lawnmower derby. This dream soon became a reality. “One day we got a few mowers together at an old farmhouse with a few friends and had the very first lawnmower derby,” Resor said. After 14 years, this event has became an annual success. On Saturday, the 14th annual R and K Lawnmower Derby is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. behind the Wapakoneta Knights of Columbus Hall.

New projects to improve trail |

By KATIE YANTIS Staff Writer ST. MARYS — Hiker, bikers and walkers in the region will notice a difference in a few sections of the Miami and Erie Canal towpath trail starting this week. Heritage Trails Park District has been working in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to complete a few projects in the area to improve the trail.

Grand Lake still a health concern |

By JENNIFER TANGEMAN Staff Writer Boats may be permitted again on Grand Lake St. Marys, but local officials still worry about the side effects of the water’s algae. Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Anderson reported Wednesday to Local Emergency Planning Committee members that his recent tests of the lake show numbers nearly back to normal. Anderson said results may be effected by the current temperatures and a possible lack of runoff in the areas he is testing. However, he predicts the “ban will continue to go on.”
