Fire officials stress safety during holiday
Friday, 03 July 2009

By KRISTA HAYES
Staff Writer
With Independence Day this weekend, state and local fire officials are asking residents to remember the importance of fireworks safety.
“Fireworks are very dangerous,” said Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites. “They’re an explosive device that people have typically enjoyed and used for years. However over time, people tend to want to have bigger and better displays each year but don’t inherently stop to think about the effects fireworks could have on them and others if an explosion or accident were to occur.”
Although Krites admits that he can’t site any specific incidents during his career at the Wapakoneta Fire Department where he has been called to treat a fireworks-related injury, he said that he and the department are more than prepared to respond if needed.
“We’ve all been through numerous seminars, training sessions and have seen videos or PowerPoint presentations with people missing digits such as fingers and hands, and have even seen deaths that have occurred from fireworks explosions,” Krites said. “Auglaize County has been very fortunate not to have any serious fireworks-related deaths or injuries, although I’m sure there are those in the community who have already purchased illegal fireworks for the Fourth of July.”

Friday, 03 July 2009
By KAREN CAMPBELL
Assistant Managing Editor
A child’s piggy bank was stolen sometime in recent weeks from a rural Wapakoneta home and nearly $400 taken.
Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said Larry Lowe, 17452 Ohio 65, reported the bank, shaped like a baby bottle, was taken sometime after noon June 12.
He noticed it missing June 26, but did not report it until Wednesday morning.
Inside the bank was approximately $130 in loose change, $75 in savings bonds, a hand printed Liberty quarter and a Sacagawea $1 coin.

One of the greatest places to spend a week-end or a few days is,
Put-In-Bay Ohio. There is so much to do even for the younger crowd. There are
wonderful shops great places to eat, rent a golf cart or mini bike and cruise the
island. The monument is a must and there are actually 5 soliders burried in there.
Wonderful history! Hit the Round House with Mad Dog Mike, he is great and a must
see.  What a great entertaining commedian. You can take the jet or the ferrie over
from Port Clinton, Ohio if you do not have a boat to go on. - Penelope Nino

We are vacationing and attending a church conference in the West
Coast and Central Florida area. I love the palm trees, water, scenery, and lovely
stucco buildings. We are fortunate to have family in florida so it makes the trip
even more pleasant.  We have enjoyed taking pictures on our trip as well. We miss
our church family and friends in Wapakoneta - but do love Florida scenery - Brenda Lewis

As a former resident of Ohio, I would like to say one of the best
places to go for historical is Charleston, SC.  The people are very friendly and
helpful with all your questions on what to see in this very old-historical city.
There are many beautiful plantations to visit.  The city offers a vast number of
tours which include:  walking, carriage, bus, home, ghost, and many other tours.
The City Market is an outdoor market where vendors come to sell their wares.  But
Charleston is known for its vast number of restaurants serving a wide variety of
dishes.  Seafood is the most offered in this Low Country city with a touch of
southern cooking.  Please look at Charleston as a place to go to relax and enjoy the
most friendly city in the country. - Curt Bowsher
