Bernard D. “Bernie” McCarty, 84, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:42 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Wapakoneta, Manor.
He was born March 21, 1927, in a farm home in Marion Township, Hardin County, the son of Francis (Fields) and Hobart McCarty, who preceded him in death. On June 8, 1947, he married Mary Ann Copeland, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son, Ronald J. McCarty, of Wapakoneta; two sisters, Darlene Beelman, of Perrysburg, and Sondra (Bob) Bird, of Yuma, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Myra Van Voorhis.
He was self employed and owned McCarty Oil Company. In the early 1950s, he started as owner of a tank wagon route delivering to farms, homes, and commercial accounts for Standard Oil, Marathon Oil Co. and Valvoline Oil Products. He later owned and operated a mini-truck stop in Cridersville, and a service station in Wapakoneta. A farmer in Union Township, he also owned bulk plant facilities in Lima and Dayton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta and a 1945 graduate of Lakeview High School. He was a member and past president of the Wapakoneta Lions Club, and member of the former Wapakoneta Elks. His hobbies included western square dancing, camping, and boating.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta, with the Rev. R. J. Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Union Township.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
