BOTKINS â The Botkins Trojans varsity boys basketball team hammered down a 68-36 victory over the Fairlawn Jets on Tuesday night at Botkins High School.
The win boosted Botkinsâ record to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in Shelby County League play.
Botkins didnât waste any time establishing a mood of high intensity.
After winning the tip, the Trojansâ grabbed two buckets right away and finished the quarter with a seven-point run to take a 13-10 lead.
Junior Heath Geyer drained a three to start the second quarter. Increasing their lead little-by-little, the Trojans went on to score 17 more points while only giving up seven to end the half up 30-15.
âLooking to continue our run into the third quarter, we told our boys to focus on getting the ball down the court,â Trojans varsity coach Brett Meyer said.
They did just that.
Botkins senior Ethan Zimpfer started the third quarter with a pair of free throws.
Not quite ready to give up the fight yet, Fairlawn junior Jessie Hughes sank a bucket to give hope to his teammates. Fellow junior Try Everett added two more shots of his own. But the Jets couldnât hold on to it and finished the quarter down 51-23.
The fourth quarter came and went in a flash but not without its fair share of free throws. Entering the double bonus late in the quarter, the Jets sent the Trojans to the line 10 times.
Botkins shot 75 percent from the line.
âWe spend about 15 to 50 minutes a day on free throws, but the last couple of games we havenât had the opportunity to showcase these as a strength,â Meyer said. âSo getting to the line 20 times tonight was a key to our win.â
Finishing off the quarter, the Trojans gained another 10 points as the Jets only added another two.
The Trojans led the way on both ends of the floor. With 38 rebounds and eight steals, Botkinsâ defensive was just as tight as their offense.
âTonight we played a solid four quarters,â Meyer said. âThere was a point we seemed to be stuck at 18, but other than that we were solid on both the offensive and defensive ends.â
Senior Tyler Egbert led Botkins with 13 points on five buckets and a 3-pointer, followed by Zimpfer with 12 and juniors Josh Schwartz and Gabe Lawrence each with 11.
Botkinsâ junior varsity also grabbed a victory, winning 54-37.
The Trojans will be back in action on Friday night in another league game against the Russia Raiders.View more articles in:
