BASKETBALL: Trojans off to 2-0 start

December 2, 2011

LEWISTOWN — It will be pretty hard for first-year varsity coach Don Mack and the Botkins Trojans girls basketball team not to improve on last year’s season.

Playing with a new found spark, the Trojans got off to their first 2-0 start in many years with a 47-34 road win over Indian Lake on Tuesday.

The Trojans earned their victory primarily with a defensive press that forced 29 turnovers and a strong high-low post game that score 31 of their 47 points. Christine Johnson had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Logan Pitts helped out plenty also, dumping in another 16 points.

“We got the ball inside quite a bit,” Mack said.

Despite the pressure, Indian Lake managed to keep up for a half and trailed only by four at the break. However, the pressure and their inability to stop the two solid post players was just too much.

The Trojans finished with a 35-20 edge on the boards, and again went to the line plenty. They hit 25 of 37 shots from the foul line. They were able to get to the foul line 29 times in their season-opening win against Fairlawn But only made 14 of them.

“It is a great sign because it shows we are going to the basket,” Mack said. “It shows we are attacking. Obviously it was nice to see us make a higher percentage of them tonight to make it a bigger advantage.”

Mack said the team is currently geared towards kicking the program up a notch or two and that they need to stay focused.

“They are playing with a little more pep,” Mack said. “It is nice to start out 2-0 for the first time in a long time. We need to take this and use it for momentum.”

Mack said the team’s game with Houston (Saturday, 1 p.m.) could be a big “statement” game for the team.
