BASKETBALL: Tigers topple Fairbanks

February 3, 2012

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers earned a much needed Northwest Central Conference win, defeating the Fairbanks Panther 66-50 Thursday night in Waynesfield.

The Tigers are now 9-8 overall and 5-1 in NWCC play.

“Our shooting started out great,” W-G varsity coach Ted Patton said.

The Tigers started with a 20-12 lead in the first quarter of play. Hard defensive pressure prevented the Panthers from scoring.

Fairbanks caught up late in the second with rebounds.

“Rebounds did help us initially. They kept us in the game,” Fairbanks varsity coach Brock Oakes said.

The Panthers managed to close the gap to just one point, 31-30, going into the second half.

Late in the third quarter, Waynesfield struggled with missed shots.

“We missed a few shots late in the game but we picked up the defense,” Patton said.
“In the fourth quarter, I think we took better care of the ball.”

The Tigers managed to stay ahead and win with a 16-point lead.

Senior guard Kaylee Patton led the Tigers with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists, just missing a triple-double.

Senior guard Ivy Horn helped with 14 points.

“We spread the ball out a lot and got some kids in the book tonight,” Ted Patton said.

W-G got help from young guards freshman Sydney Buffenbarger, Abbey VanHorn and Lidia Turner behind the arc.

Sophomore Marie Conley led the Panthers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Brittany Walk chipped in with 13 points.

“Our shooting was great in the beginning but later on our percentage went down,” Oakes said. “W-G is a very good team and I knew the intensity was going to increase soon.”

Fairbanks won the junior varsity game 33-22.

The Tigers face the Fairlawn Jets on Monday on the road.
