BASKETBALL: Tigers bow out

March 1, 2012

COLDWATER — St. Henry’s large size and deep bench was too much for Waynesfield-Goshen to handle.

“We were intimidated going into the game,” Tigers varsity coach Ryan Taylor said.

The Redskins rolled to a 67-31 win over W-G in a Division IV sectional semifinal Wednesday at the Palace in Coldwater.   St. Henry improved its record to 17-4. Waynesfield-Goshen finished the season 6-15.

The Tigers struggled to score against St. Henry’s intense defense and blocked shots.  Missed shots hurt W-G in the first half. Turnovers and rebounds helped St. Henry roar out to a 32-8 lead at the break.

W-G came back after halftime playing better and made more shots, scoring 12 points in the third quarter and 11 in the fourth.

“Their size compared to us is what hurt,” Taylor said.  “You have to put shots in the basket to play against a team like them and we didn’t do that so well.

“We fought a little harder in the second half but they caught on fast and responded to it. It was a tough game but the boys tried hard and didn’t give up.”

Junior guard Dylan Little lead the Tigers with six points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Lee Turner chipped in on the board with six rebounds.

Junior center Kyle Stahl led the way for the Redskins with 15 points and eight rebounds, more than any player in the night.

Junior guard Jordan Bender helped with 10 points. Senior guard Steve Luttner came of the bench to chip in with nine points on three 3-pointers.

“We always had somebody different. We had enough players to do that,” St. Henry coach Eric Rosenbeck said. “It was a team win and we had a lot of team effort. That’s what you need to win a game.”

St. Henry advances to play New Bremen in the sectional title game at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Coldwater.
