COLDWATER — The Wapakoneta Redskins tried to claw their way out of the hole.
Unfortunately, the hole was just a little too deep — two points too deep, in fact.
Wapak rallied with 21 fourth-quarter points but came up just short of a comeback win, falling to the Coldwater Cavaliers 52-50 in a non-league varsity girls basketball game Tuesday night at Coldwater High School.
The loss dropped the Redskins to 10-7 on the season.
In a game of momentum swings, the final Cavs’ swing was too much to overcome.
Coldwater jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter. But the Redskins responded with a 12-6 second-quarter that knotted the score at 21-21 at the half.
The Cavaliers controlled the third quarter with an 18-8 rally to take 39-29 advantage into the fourth.
Sophomore Sara Warner led the Redskins with 15 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Junior Nicole Brown added 11 points, connecting on 3 of 5 three-point attempts.
Senior Courtney Knippen also scored 11 and narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine boards.
Senior Tasha Helmstetter chipped in with five points, dished out four assists and recorded four rebounds.
Coldwater got 18 points from Sarah Kanney and 12 from Kiya Dues.
Wapak returns to action 6 p.m. Thursday in a Western Buckeye League game at Van Wert.
Coldwater also won the junior varsity contest 48-43.
Lea Stoner and Megan Watt scored nine points apiece for Wapak. Carly Buzzard and Sarah Horman added eight points each.
Stoner grabbed 12 boards. Buzzard had eight rebounds.
