BASKETBALL: McComb tops Tigers

December 6, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — One after another, the shots didn’t fall.

In all, 36 of them missed the mark.

So it came as no surprise the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers found themselves on the losing end when the final horn sounded.

The Tigers could not overcome their poor shooting as they fell to the McComb Panthers 57-51 in a varsity girls basketball game Monday night at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

“Our girls are young and need to gain some more experience,” W-G coach Ted Patton said. “We just aren’t used to outside shooting.”

W-G finished the night just 15-of-51 (29 percent) from the floor and 4-of-16 (25 percent) on 3-pointers.

“We played good defense and forced them to make shots they weren’t used to making,” McComb coach Jeremy Herr said.

Despite their shooting woes, the Tigers still managed to make a game of it thanks to a solid defensive effort.

When foul trouble bit the Panthers in the second quarter, W-G made their run.

But McComb finally got back on track and took a 38-35 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Junior Kristen Buck gave the Panthers the lift they needed with back-to-back 3-pointers with two minutes to play.

For the Tigers, junior guard Kaylee Patton led the way with 34 points, the only W-G player to score in double figures.

“We changed our defensive scheme on Patton,” Herr said. “She is an excellent player but I think (senior guard) Devyn Wilson handled her fairly well. It was a team win and I am proud they all worked together.”

The Tigers open their Northwest Central Conference season 6 p.m. Thursday at home against the rival Perry Commodores.

W-G topped McComb 36-16 in the junior varsity contest on Monday.
