BASKETBALL: Hoops season opens tonight

November 25, 2011

Area high school basketball starts up tonight when the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls team travels to Waynesfield to take on the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers.

Wapak is coming off a disappointing 2010-2011 season marred by numerous injuries. Seniors Tasha Helmstetter, Mallory McDevitt and Morgan Quellhorst all missed time due to injuries last year but are back for the 2011-2012 campaign.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, senior Ashley Knippen is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in the powder-puff football game a few weeks ago.

The Tigers have high hopes for the coming season. They lost three-point record-holder Shelby Gilroy to graduation, as well as point guard Abbey Gray. But Kaylee Patton and Ivy Horn, amongst others, are back and gunning for the Northwest Central Conference title.

Tip off is at 6 tonight for the junior varsity contest.
