BASEBALL: Wapak wins ACME opener

June 2, 2011

Wapakoneta opened the 2011 ACME season with a win, edging Indian Lake 3-1 on Wednesday at Wapakoneta High School.

“[Y]ou could tell some of these guys have not played for a couple of weeks,” Wapak coach Nick Sammetinger said. “I am happy with the performance but will continue to challenge each player to improve every day.”

Marshall Gerlach threw a complete-game, five-hitter for the win. Gerlach threw just 89 pitches, 67 of them for strikes.

He struck out 14 and walked just two. He allowed just one run, an unearned run in the seventh inning.

Gerlach was perfect through the first two innings before giving up a walk in the third.

Offensively Wapak managed just four hits. But it took advantage of those opportunities to score three runs.

Catcher Brandon Schreiber was 2-for-2 with a walk and scored a run. He also had a stolen base.

Chace Culver went 1 for 2 with a double and a walk, drove in one run and scored once.

Gerlach helped his own cause by going 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Josh Carder walked twice and scored a run.

Behind the plate, Schreiber, picked three runners, including one runner on second base in the third inning.

Wapak returns to action tonight at 6:30 at Minster.
