BASEBALL: Minster hands Wapak first loss

April 3, 2012

MINSTER —  On Monday night, undefeated Wapakoneta traveled to take on the 2011 State Champions, the Minster Wildcats.

Phenomenal pitching by both pitchers resulted in an 4-1 Minster win, improving to 4-1 on the season as the Redskins fell to 7-1.

The home team cracked the scoreboard first when Devon Poeppelman reached on base from a walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a balk by Wapakoneta pitcher, Dom Campos. Adam Niemeyer hit a pop fly to center field to bring home Poeppelman.

The big inning came in the fourth for Minster scoring three runs. The rally started off with back-to-back singles by Drew Elson and Jay Eilerman. Third baseman, Austin Knapke stepped to the plate hitting a RBI double sending home Elson. The next batter, Niemeyer drilled a two-run RBI double, scoring Eilerman and Knapke.

The Redskins scored their only run in the sixth inning from Alex Koch with an RBI single from Johnny Crawford.

Niemeyer pitched an impressive 14 strikeouts allowing just one unearned run, two walks, one hit batsman and one hit in his seven innings of work. Campos struck out nine batters, giving up seven hits, four runs and two walks.

“On some days like this when Adam has a good pitching night, the defense can sometimes get lackadaisical when they are out there and not one time in the game I could see that our defense was creeping in or moving in on the pitch, “said Minster coach Mike Wiss. “We knew that they were a good team but we were ready to come and play today.”

Minster had four runs, seven hits, one error and seven left on base, while Wapakoenta had one run, one hit, no errors and four left on base.

“We knew this was going to be the toughest game of the year so far going up against the defending state champs, “said Wapakoenta coach Jason Brandt. “Niemeyer kept working ahead on the count and had our batters baffled all night long. We were pleased with alot of things we did but we still know that we have alot of work ahead of us.”
