Barbara M. Nagel, 88
Barbara M. Nagel, 88, of Wapakoneta, died 5:45 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at The Gardens, Wapakoneta, where she had resided for the past six years. She was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Rose (Strominger) and Wilbur Nagel.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Theresa Nagel, of Wapakoneta, 15 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William H., Robert G. and J. Paul Nagel.
After graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1941, Barbara entered the Community of the Sisters of the Precious Blood, Dayton. She remained in the order for 30 years during which time she worked as a teacher. Her duties took her to various schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as well as mission schools, in Arizona, Colorado and Wisconsin.
In 1971, Barbara withdrew from the religious order and returned to Wapakoneta where she made her home with her parents until their deaths. While in Wapakoneta, Barbara’s work was that of bookkeeper-clerk for the Nagel Electric Store until its close in 1990.
Then she did several years of substitute teaching in the Wapakoneta City Schools. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, where she was a CCD instructor for 45 years, a lector and lay distributor.
She was also a member of the former Catholic Ladies of St. Joseph. Her hobbies included traveling, music and playing the violin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, with the Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating. Burial is to follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Wapakoneta.
The family will receive friends 9 to 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, State Route 501, Wapakoneta. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church Renovation Fund or St. Rita’s Hospice.
