Avelene Louise Metzger, 91, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 10:12 a.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born May 12, 1922, in Waynesfield, the daughter of Harrison Guy and Glenna Irene (Hefner) Gossard, who preceded her in death. On May 2, 1943, she married Amos Howard Wilson, who died in 1944 serving in World War II. Then on May 12, 1948, she married Chester Lee Metzger, and he died April 26, 1991.
Survivors include, a daughter, Gloria (Lowell) Headapohl, of Wapakoneta; two grandchildren, Barbara (John) Barnhart, of Wapakoneta and Christopher (Ashley) Headapohl, of Wapakoneta; three great-grandchildren, John Barnhart, Jr., Derek Barnhart and Dakota Headapohl; a sister-in-law, Adalia Gossard, of Wapakoneta.
She was preceded in death by four siblings, Margaret Gossard, Jack Gossard, Beula Stettler and Brooks Gossard.
A homemaker, Avelene worked at Westinghouse Corp., Lima. She attended St. Markâ€™s Lutheran Church, in Wapakoneta. Avelene spent 30 winters in south Texas and enjoyed warm winters with her many â€śsnowbirdâ€ť friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, state Route 501, Wapakoneta, with Pastor Mark Bauer officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be at a later date in the Fairmount Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of the service, Saturday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Community Health Professionals of Tri-County Hospice.
