The fourth annual Heirloom Bulb Sale, featuring 12 varieties of bulbs, starts today with a deadline for ordering the bulbs being Sept. 30.
The Auglaize County Historical Society is offering the bulbs, all of which are older varieties rarely seen in garden centers, a historical society official says, with the bulbs being introduced to the world as early as 1594 and as late as 1925.
“We call this our ‘History in the Garden’ project,” Auglaize County Historical Society Administrator Rachel Barber said. “It’s just another way that the Historical Society is seeking to create an interest in history to different segments of the community. We’ve been very pleased with the quality of bulbs provided by the supplier, and know that residents will be happy they supported the society by purchasing the bulbs.”
She noted residents who do not have gardens have the option of becoming “Garden Angels” and purchasing bulbs for use by one of the county’s many local gardening clubs.
People can take advantage of the program. People who buy 10 bulbs of any one kind get an 11th of the same variety for free.
Barber explained the deadline for ordering is Sept. 30 and order forms are available from the Historical Society by calling 419-738-9328. They also can e-mail the organization at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Founded in 1963, Auglaize County Historical Society collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the history of Auglaize County and its people through exhibits, programs, and publications.
