Armstrong plates may be sole survivors
The note from the publisher mentioned a man in Atlanta, Ga., who claimed to have historic printing plates about the moon landing, along with a request to check into it.
Dutifully, the editor made the call.
On the other end was Paul Harris, who said he may have front-page plates from the presses at the Wapakoneta Daily News from the dates that Apollo 11 took off, the Eagle landed on the moon and the crew returned to earth.
Upon further inquiry, Harris said the plates were passed down to him about 10 years ago from his father, who acquired them from the newspaper, although details escape him. The elder Harris was an advertising manager with the Marsh supermarket chain, which, at the time had a store in Wapakoneta.
Anyone with more information on these plates is encouraged to call the editor Tom Wehrhahn at 419-739-3515, or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
