BOTKINS — An area student was selected by his high school to share his musical skills during a special 9/11 band performance.
Botkins High School junior Adam Ewry was selected by his band director to play with the Sidney Civic Band at their “9/11 Tenth Anniversary Commemorative Concert.”
“It was a good experience playing with all the excellent musicians,” Ewry said. “I was probably the youngest one there.”
The Sidney Civic Band, which is under the direction of Philip K. Chilcote, recently established an apprentice program to encourage high school students to expand on their instrumental musical careers.
Nine high schools from Shelby County, including Anna, Houston, Russia, Sidney, Fairlawn, Jackson Center, Fort Loramie, Lehman and Botkins, were represented at the concert.
The band director at each of the schools nominated one student to play in this prestigious concert. The student was one that the band director felt was

was enthusiastic about his music and instrument.
Botkins High School Band Director Paula Owen selected Ewry, who plays the tuba, to participate in the concert.
“I had no idea she was going to choose me,” the son of Shelly and Pat Ewry said. “I just thought there was so much talent in this band, why me?”
But Ewry was honored he received the privilege to play at the commemorative concert with the 60 other band members.
The concert was held Sept. 11 at the Sidney Lehman High School Gynasium.
“It made me feel good,” the Wapakoneta resident said, when he was selected two months prior to play in the performance. “I felt honored to play at the 10th anniversary concert.”
Ewry said he was required to learn 20 pieces of music prior to the concert, which included “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Hymn to the Fallen.” He practiced one to two hours each night to prepare for the concert.
“I learned that not one person can be their own band, it takes work from everyone,” Ewry said.
Ewry is involved in the marching, pep and concert bands at his school, and is hoping to play with the Sidney Civic Band again.
“I’m hoping to play with them this summer and get a scholarship,” Ewry said.
He said the band awards one scholarship to a student.
After high school, Ewry said he may like to study music, but plans to go with the flow and see what happens.
“Playing the tuba is a very rare skill now a days,” Ewry said.
