Wapakoneta pitcher Chase Culver, who came into the game with a 2-0 record, seemed on top of his game allowing only a walk over the first two innings. Josh Apple hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a fielding error by the center fielder. Apple scored after moving to third on a passed ball and scored when Chandler Kaeck was able to draw a throw and get stuck in a run-down between first and second long enough to score him and give Wapak a short-lived 1-0 lead.
In the decisive third inning, Scott Butz doubled for what would prove to be the first of two hits for him in the inning. Skylar McCarter beat out a bunt for a hit, and a double by Derek Waterman scored two runs. After a sacrifice bunt, the next three Celina batters reached base with two hits and an error to plate four more runs and chase Culver out of the game.
Wapak coach Willie Sammetinger said he felt the one-inning breakdown could have been in large part to a long layoff due to inclement weather.
“We haven’t played in five days and it makes a big difference,” Sammetinger said. “A lot of times games can be broke down to one inning making a difference.”
Sammetinger said the big inning was a result of Culver being unable to get ahead in the count.
“You have to be able to work ahead in the count,” Sammetinger said. “He had some counts where he got behind and as a result he had to lay the ball out there on a tee. If you don’t work ahead in the count, that will come back to haunt you no matter what level you are playing at.”
However, Sammetinger said his team has been resilient in the past, as they have posted a 9-2 mark so far.
“This is a good team and they want to play,” he said.
Wapak hosts Van Wert tonight at 6:30 at Wapakoneta High School.
