BOWLING GREEN — The season ended for all but one Redskin golfer Tuesday morning, as senior Caleb Acheson qualified for districts as an individual.
The Wapakoneta Redskins traveled to Bowling Green and played Stone Ridge golf course in the 2012 Division I Sectional Golf Tournament Tuesday.
Wapakoneta shot a team total of 339, good enough to place 10th out of 19 teams, but not good enough to advance as a team.
“When you go against Division I schools in the Northwest area, you are competing among the best in the state,” said varsity head coach Kenny Wayman.
Wayman said that adverse weather conditions and a challenging course may have added to the team total.
“I thought we played very good as a team under those circumstances,” Wayman said.
“Leading the way was our solid one man all year, Caleb Acheson, with a 78. The score was good enough to advance to the districts next Thursday at Mowhawk Country Club,” Wayman said.
Acheson shot a 39 on the front and a 39 on the back.
“I was impressed how he kept his composure from the start to finish of his round,” Wayman said. “He started on the back for his round and was steady throughout until he got to his next nine.”
Acheson triple bogeyed the 10th hole he played, but played even par the next 8 hole for a solid finish.
Sophomore Drew Wayman shot an 82 but was four strokes off of advancing to districts.
“He had a few three putts and two bogies that hurt him a bit,” Kenny Wayman said. “I was proud how he played and kept plugging away through the round.”
Wayman, again only a sophomore, has two more years on the team to fulfill personal goals.
Bobby Crow shot a 41-45 for an 86. Bobby, a junior, has one more year.
The two other seniors, Aaron Johnson and Josh Apple, finished their golf career Tuesday morning shooting a 93 and 105, respectively.
“They were our four and five man all year. They provided humor, respect, encouragement, and a positive attitude throughout their high school golf career at Wapakoneta. Hopefully, the underclassman took notice and will carry on that tradition,” Wayman said.
