To remember and honor all who lost their lives during the tragedies on Sept. 11, 2001, members of the local fire department is organizing a memorial service on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
Wapakoneta Fire Department members are organizing a 9/11 memorial service on Sunday at the north lawn at the fire station.
“We pledged that we would never forget those who were left behind,” Fire Chief Kendall Krites said. “Please bring your lawn chairs and plan to take part in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice on this horrific day in U.S. history, 10 years ago.”
The public is invited to attend this event, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
Krites said he is planning on having guest speakers, including himself, a county commissioner, Mayor Rodney Metz and a representative from the Wapakoneta Police Department.
In addition, there will be a moment of prayer and the Wapakoneta VFW will provide a Color Guard with “Taps” and a 21-gun salute.
Krites and his crew are also planning on setting a screen up outside, and having a brief PowerPoint slideshow with photos from New York City before, during and after the 9/11 events.
“This is a day to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice that day,” Krites said.
Krites also is working with area churches to put together a fellowship reception after the event with punch and cookies.
Eagle Scout Zach Orchard is to be present to dedicate a memorial monument he put together for his Eagle Scout project. The memorial monument is located at the fire station and represents the past, present and future firefighters.
Krites extended the invitation to all county fire chiefs and departments to make it a county wide remembrance event.
In 2002, the Wapakoneta Fire Department hosted an event in honor of the one year anniversary of the event, and this year, he wanted to host another event in honor of the 10-year anniversary to remember those who had lost their lives and the friends and family members who were left to pick up the pieces.
