The Auglaize County Humane Society’s first 5K and 1 mile fun run “Paws for a Cause” will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Veterans Memorial Park, Wapakoneta.
Care giver and co-manager of the shelter Deb Logan is organizing the event. She said 5Ks are a popular type of fundraiser in this area, and she is expecting a good turn out.
“I would love to have at least 50 runners,” Logan said. “It’s going to be an annual thing, so get your registrations in and come out and have a good time.”
Pre-registration at the Auglaize County Humane Society is $25 for adults and $15 for children under 10 years old. Race-day registration is $30 for adults and $20 for children and starts at 7:30 a.m. at the park. Children under 5 are free.
The 1 mile fun run for children and pets will start at 8:45 a.m.
Award medals will be given for the top three male, female and owner/dog duos.
Door prizes will be raffled off after the race.
Participants are welcomed to walk as well as run, and everyone is encouraged to bring their canine companions. Shelter dog partners will be available the day of the race.
“If you don’t have a pet and you want to get one of ours, you can do that,” Logan said.
Logan said this is a fun, new way to generate money for the shelter.
“All proceeds are coming back to the shelter to help fund with the food and care items for the pets,” Logan said.
The shelter is currently holding 50 dogs and 50 cats and is at full capacity.
“We are a non for profit, so every money we make goes back into the shelter and pays to take care of the shelter’s pets,” Logan said. “There’s always a need for food and cleaning supplies.”
Logan said the shelter generally spends $50 a week on cleaning supplies.
This is one of a handful of fundraisers the humane society hosts every year. The next fundraiser will be a “bikini carwash” with the shelter dogs wearing bikinis in June.
