‘Tis the season: Large crowd ushers in Holidays
Large crowds turned out in downtown Wapakoneta this past weekend as the Wapakoneta Antique and Specialty Shops (WASS) hosted a Home For the Holidays open house.
Several businesses took part in the event designed to help kick off the holiday season.
Along with weekend shopping specials, residents could enjoy horse and carriage rides, warm cider, scented pine cones, and a bazaar at the church.
WASS Chair Charlotte Williams said shop owners were surprised and very happy with the total turnout that came into town over the weekend. She estimated approximately 800 people crowded stores for the shopping weekend.
“We thought having an event like this was very important because there is a lot of new shops that have opened up,” Williams said. “We just wanted to introduce people to the shops and help kick off the holiday season.”
Williams said many people came in from out -of-town, as she met people from different towns including Lima and Van Wert that came into town for the shopping specials.
Included was the Village Green, Haehn’s Florist, Smith’s Old Country Furniture and Hardwoods, Bookmarks, Dad’s Toy Shop, Macky’s Health Food, Fernhill Farmhouse, the Auglaize Antique Mall, Casa Chic, St. Paul’s Church of Christ, Roots and Shoots Garden Club, Rustic Design, Riverside Arts Center, Gild the Lily, New Beginnings and Moon Florist, and the Herb Ladies.
Also, several people who were from out-of-state visiting relatives also took advantage of the weekend’s festivities.
“We wanted to have that hometown feeling and the weather was good,” Williams said. “We had Christmas music playing and that helped out, too. If people enjoy it, they will come back.”
