The Wapakoneta Redskins created runs with the help of five doubles out of their eight hits in Monday’s game.

Although the offense produced fewer hits as the game wore on, they were solid enough in other areas to hold off the St. John’s Blue Jays in the season opener for both teams.

The Redskins emerged with a 6-3 non-league victory Monday over St. John’s in varsity baseball action at Wapakoneta High School.

“We would give them a ‘B’ grade,” Redskins varsity coach Jason Brandt said. “It was a good first day win against a good team. You can’t complain when you win. We did a lot things well.
“We hit the ball hard all day long. We were aggressive on the bases. Defensively, we were adequate. The pitchers have to do a better job of throwing first-pitch strikes.”
