Bluffton tops Wapakoneta in overtime

A 3-pointer by Bluffton’s Bret Rumer with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 46-46, and the undefeated Bluffton Pirates emerged from overtime with a 59-53 win Tuesday over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a non-league varsity boys basketball game at Wapakoneta High School.

The Redskins had a five-point lead with 2:39 left in the game and attempted to exhaust the remaining time, but a missed front end of a one-and-one gave the Pirates possession with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation.

Wapakoneta earns tough win over LCC

Facing their best opponent of the season — the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds — things did not come easy for the Wapakoneta Redskins often in Monday’s game.

The speed of the game and pressure was unlike what undefeated Wapakoneta had seen in its five previous wins.

The Redskins were eventually able to control the pace and handle the pressure, holding down LCC in the second half to record a 69-56 win Monday in non-league varsity girls basketball action at Wapakoneta High School.

Redskins rout Kenton with big 2nd half

The lightswitch turned back on for the Wapakoneta Redskins’ offense in the third quarter after a lull in the second quarter against the visiting Kenton Wildcats.

The Redskins rolled to 47 points in the second half, stretching their lead to 30 points, 72-32, midway through the fourth quarter, while junior point guard Ethan Good scored a career-high 23 points.

Redskins sweep dual, avenge loss to Bath

BATH TOWNSHIP — The Wapakoneta Redskins avenged one of their league losses from last season on Tuesday night, defeating the Bath Wildcats 44-25 in a Western Buckeye League dual match.

The Redskins also crushed the Celina Bulldogs, 63-6, in their other dual match Tuesday at Bath High School.

Last season Bath, along with Defiance, accounted for Wapakoneta’s two losses in WBL competition, which ultimately ended the Redskins’ streak of four straight league championships.

Botkins denies Waynesfield-Goshen comeback

BOTKINS — After playing to a 19-19 tie at halftime, the winner of Monday’s game would be decided by whichever team won the second half.

The Botkins Trojans used a strong third quarter to cushion themselves against the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, and despite a nice comeback by W-G, the Trojans prevailed for a 37-33 win in a non-league varsity girls basketball game at Botkins High School.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Trojans (2-5), while W-G was coming off of its first win of the season.

Sutton breaks school mark in Wapakoneta win

Charlie Sutton took down one more school record Thursday, as the Wapakoneta Redskins junior notched his fifth all time mark out of eight individual events.

Sutton broke the Wapakoneta swimming record in the 100-yard butterfly Thursday in a tri-meet at Wapakoneta Family YMCA in varsity boys action.

Sutton, who set four school records last season, posted a time of 55.01 seconds to best the previous mark of 55.18 set by Ryan Kremer in 2012.

Wapakoneta takes down Lima Senior

Keaton Metz scored a go-ahead layup in the final seconds to give the Wapakoneta Redskins a one-point win, 50-49, over the shorthanded Lima Senior Spartans in varsity boys basketball action Tuesday at Wapakoneta High School.

The Tuesday night contest was the season opener for both teams.

Local boy in Columbus hospital visits Ohio Stadium

Leo Blevins — a local boy who was struck by a car almost two months ago and has been in a Columbus hospital ever since — was afforded an outstanding opportunity Thursday night.

Blevins, an eighth-grader at Wapakoneta who has been recovering from life-threatening injuries at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, was introduced in front of more than 10,000 fans Thursday night during the Ohio high school state football championship game, played at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, home of the Buckeyes.

Four from Wapakoneta earn All-Ohio

Four members of the Wapakoneta Redskins football team received All-Ohio selections within Division III for the 2014 season, the Associated Press unveiled Tuesday night.

Senior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein repeated as an all-state choice, grabbing first-team honors for this season. He was a special mention All-Ohioan last year.

Schoenlein finished the season with 44.5 tackles, 16.5 for loss, six sacks and four fumble recoveries.

Wapakoneta tops St. Henry in 1st game of season

The Wapakoneta Redskins’ defense was imposing enough all game long Tuesday to hold down the St. Henry Redskins, forcing 20 turnovers from the visitors Tuesday in Wapakoneta’s season opener.

And although Wapakoneta’s offense was not near midseason form, the team was pretty strong in certain moments, as it managed a 42-31 win over St. Henry in a non-league girls basketball contest.

Facing a Wapakoneta press which appeared throughout the game, St. Henry had nine turnovers in the first quarter, as Wapakoneta established a 9-2 lead.
