FOOTBALL: Tigers take on Fort Recovery

September 2, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — If the first week is any implications of what is to come in week two, the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers could be in for another game of offensive highlight reels against Fort Recovery.
The Tigers have taken deep steps with their football program, winning 51 games in the last seven years. However, an often less-than-impressive schedule often left them untested. As a result, the school’s first playoff win in their history has still eluded them despite their regular season success.
About three years ago, the coaching staff began to formulate a plan to take care of that problem.

FOOTBALL: Wapak, Elida battle in key WBL game

September 1, 2011

It wasn’t that long ago that a Wapakoneta/Elida matchup was considered an afterthought in the Western Buckeye League picture.
Not this year. And not this weekend.
After years of being also-rans, Wapak and Elida are now contenders.
The Redskins and the Bulldogs will square off at 7:30 tomorrow night in what is probably the biggest game in Week 1 of the WBL season.
When the question is asked — ‘Can anyone challenge Kenton this year?’ — these are usually the first two names to enter the discussion.
And for good reason.
Gone are the days when Elida was the doormat of the WBL.

SOCCER: Wapak girls, Elida play to tie

August 31, 2011

ELIDA — After being outshot, outplayed and outscored for 52 minutes, the Wapakoneta Redskins finally took their first shot on goal.
And Mallory McDevitt made it count.
McDevitt drove a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the corner of the net for an equalizing goal to give Wapak a 1-1 tie with the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League girls soccer match Tuesday night at Elida Middle School.
Elida controlled the first half of play, taking six shots on goal to none for the Redskins.

TENNIS: Shawnee snaps Wapak unbeaten streak

August 30, 2011

Western Buckeye League favorite Shawnee handed the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls tennis team its first loss of the season with a 5-0 sweep in a WBL match at the Harmon Park courts.
The Indians won four of the five matches in two sets.
Wapak’s second doubles team of Chloe Veit and Rachel Roberts forced a third set against Maryan Adewami and Jordan Ward. After dropping the first 6-0, Veit and Roberts responded with a 7-5 win in the second set. But the Shawnee duo edged them 7-5 in the third.
Shawnee’s Lauren Rouner topped Makenzie Klock 6-1, 6-1 in first singles.

PREP ROUNDUP: Redskins pummel Pioneers

August 29, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team rolled to an 11-1 win over the Temple Christian Pioneers on Saturday at Ryan Field in Wapakoneta.
Wapak jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the match and stretched it to 10-0 at the half.
Travis Bertram scored the Redskins first goal at 4:08 on an assist from Colin Mankin. And Bertram returned the favor to Mankin at 5:24.
Then Bertram punched in his second goal on an assist from Sam Hinegardner at 7:54.
Bertram finished with three goals. Mankin and Hinegardner had two goals apiece.

FOOTBALL: 'Skins blast Chieftains

August 27, 2011

Pretty much the only thing Wapakoneta Redskins football coach Doug Frye was smiling about Friday night was the final score.
Frye’s Redskins trounced the Bellefontaine Chieftains 48-0 in the season opener for both teams at Harmon Field.
Wapak scored 21 points in the final four minutes of the first half to turn a 14-0 game into a rout.
In spite of what the scoreboard read, Frye saw room for improvement.
“I’m happy with the start,” Frye said. “But not pleased.”
The Redskins used two big plays from senior Kevin Kraft and a big game rushing by senior Connor Pickens to pull away to the win.

FOOTBALL: Wapak honors '86 team

August 27, 2011

Jim Elshire remembers that day in the summer of 1986, the one when senior Kyle Stroh pulled into his driveway and told him the Redskins were going to win the next season.
And win they did.
A lot — becoming only the second Wapakoneta football team to go 10-0 in the regular season and the first to make the playoffs.
Elshire, the coach of that ’86 team, was among the honorees in attendance at a reception and ceremony honoring the team Friday night before the Redskins’ season opener against Bellefontaine at Harmon Field.
Stroh remembers that day too.

FOOTBALL: Triad trips up Tigers

August 27, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — The Triad Cardinals spoiled the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers’ season opener with a 39-22 win Friday night at Waynesfield-Goshen Tiger stadium.
Big third- and fourth-down plays by the Cardinals hurt the Tigers’ chances for victory.
“The biggest thing is coming up with big plays,” W-G coach Gary Spencer said. “We may have missed tackles but we need to learn from our mistakes and I think we’ll be fine.”
