FOOTBALL: Wapak heads into hornets' nest

September 29, 2011

Sometimes a matchup just screams “epic.”
Friday night’s Western Buckeye League matchup between Wapakoneta and Ottawa-Glandorf certainly appears to be one of those.
The Redskins are 5-0 overall, 4-0 in the WBL and ranked 12th in the latest AP Division II state poll.
O-G is 4-1 and 3-1, and is ranked 10th in Division IV.
Wapak, by all appearances, is walking into the proverbial hornets’ nest.
The Titans are coming off a tough 36-20 loss to the No. 1 ranked Kenton Wildcats, a game they were still in until the final minutes.

BOYS SOCCER: St. Marys blanks Redskins

September 28, 2011

Wapakoneta and St. Marys met six times in the previous three varsity boys soccer seasons — three times in the regular season and three times in the tournament.
The Roughriders won all three regular season matchups. And the Redskins exacted revenge on their biggest rival in the postseason, winning all three of those contests.
St. Marys continued its control of the regular season with a 3-0 shutout of the Redskins on Tuesday at Ryan Field.
If they meet again in postseason play, Roughriders first-year varsity coach Dave Ring doesn’t plan on letting the trend continue.

GIRLS TENNIS: O-G edges Wapak

September 28, 2011

The Ottawa-Glandorf Titans pulled out a 3-2 win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls tennis match Tuesday at the new Rotary Club courts at Wapakoneta High School.
Wapak’s Makenzie Klock swept O-G’s Ashley Heckman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 in first singles.
Redskins’ Annie Harrod provided the other Wapak win, topping the Titans’ Amy Schmeidebusch 6-1, 6-3 in third singles.
In second singles, O-G’s Kim Kahle bested Wapak’s Shelby Gillespie 6-3, 6-2.

GIRLS SOCCER: Wapak ties St. Marys

September 27, 2011

ST. MARYS — After almost 73 minutes of scoreless soccer, St. Marys and Wapakoneta each scored a goal in the game’s final seven minutes as they played to a 1-1 tie in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls soccer match Monday at West Field in St. Marys.
After the Roughriders took a late 1-0 lead, Wapak scored the equalizer and threw the proverbial wrench into St. Marys’ WBL title defense.

PREP ROUNDUP: Redskins top Indian Lake

September 27, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls volleyball team improved its record to 9-6 with a four-game win over the Indian Lake Lakers on Monday at Wapakoneta High School.
Wapak won handily in the first two games — 25-18 and 25-13 — before the Lakers bounced back to take the third game 25-19.
But the Redskins were too much for Indian Lake in the fourth, pulling out a 25-18 win.
Senior hitters Morgan Quellhorst and Krissy Stienbaugh led Wapak with 12 kills each.
Quellhorst added four blocks. Junior libero Amber Dickerson had 30 digs.

FOOTBALL: Wapak ends Defiance drought

September 24, 2011

DEFIANCE — Connor Pickens had another big night and the Wapakoneta defense rebounded from a sluggish start as the Redskins defeated the Defiance Bulldogs 21-7 at Fred J. Brown Stadium for the first time since 1989.
“We knew it was a tough environment to come into,” Wapak coach Doug Frye said. “We cleared a hurdle tonight. ... We’re making some progress. I’m just a hard guy to please.”
The win upped Wapak’s record to 5-0 on the season and got the Redskins within one win of their first back-to-back winning seasons since 1991.

FOOTBALL: Tigers trump Commodores

September 24, 2011

PERRY TOWNSHIP — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers spoiled the Perry Commodores’ homecoming game with a 20-7 victory Friday night.
It was the third straight win for W-G, which is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Central Conference.
“The defense really stepped up tonight,” W-G coach Gary Spencer said. “We kept the Commodores to under 100 yards on offense.”
Both teams had trouble with traction thanks to wet conditions on the field. Perry struggled on its option ground attack while W-G struggled to run the ball and had to rely more on its passing game for the win.

GIRLS GOLF: Wapak 3rd at WBL tourney

September 24, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team placed third at the Western Buckeye League tournament Friday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
The tournament was delayed for an hour because of rain. Once it resumed, there were few surprises as the Shawnee Indians rolled to the win.
Shawnee carded a team score of 351. Defiance was second at 383. Wapak shot a 400. And Celina took fourth with a 435.

VOLLEYBALL: Wapak wins thriller

September 23, 2011

Megan Hayzlett sure picked a good time to have a career night.
The junior middle hitter had her best game as a varsity player to help lead the Wapakoneta Redskins to a 3-2 win over the Defiance Bulldogs in a pivotal Western Buckeye League volleyball match Thursday at Wapakoneta High School.
“I told the girls, that is probably the biggest win in my two years here,” Wapak coach Keith Rambin said. “It was probably our best performance of the year when we needed it most.”
