SPENCERVILLE — There was only so much the Wapakoneta Redskins could do.
Emily Ruhe was just that good.
The Bath junior scored 20 points and pulled down 17 rebounds — both game highs — to lead the Wildkittens past the Redskins, 48-31, in a Division II girls basketball sectional final Saturday night at Spencerville High School.
KENTON — The Wapakoneta Redskins started strong and nearly finished strong.
But they hit a wall in the second quarter and never fully recovered, suffering a 54-46 defeat at the hands of the Kenton Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday night at Kenton High School.
Wapak scored just two points in the second quarter on a Travis Bertram jumper at the 4:53 mark.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 22-14 lead at the half.
PIQUA — Freshman Mitchell Goubeaux hit the two most important free throws of his high school career in the final seconds as the Botkins Trojans claimed a 50-49 victory over the Fort Loramie Redskins in a Division IV first-round sectional tournament game Friday night at Piqua High School.
The game was tied up 40-40 with 1:25 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Redskins senior Tyler Miracle drained a three-point shot to instantly rejuvenate his teammates.
That was all the cushion Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Josie Miller needed to advance the finals of the girls 50-yard freestyle in the Division II state swimming meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
It was also all she needed to guarantee her spot in Redskins history as the only Wapakoneta individual swimmer to reach the medal stand at the state meet.
In the preliminary race on Thursday, Miller swam a 24.43 for the eighth fastest time of the day.
CANTON — Botkins senior Logan Bauer returned home a state champion Wednesday as he won the state diving championship in finals at Canton.
But it wasn’t easy.
Bauer and Canton Central Catholic diver Alex Gonzalez were neck-and-neck throughout the entire competition. Gonzalez had a slight lead after the first dive, but Bauer recaptured the lead after the second dive and lead through the fourth dive.
Gonzalez again captured the lead after the fifth dive and was a fraction of a point ahead going into the final two dives.
