SWIMMING: 'Skins finish 7th at Holiday meet

January 2, 2012

LIMA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys and girls swimming teams both finished seventh in the Holiday Invitational on Thursday at the Lima Family YMCA.

The Shawnee Indians won both groups.

In all, 18 boys teams and 17 girls teams competed in the annual event.

For the Redskins boys team, Ryan Kremer grabbed third in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Nate Hager took third in the 200 freestyle. He also placed sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Ryan Greve was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

BASKETBALL: Wapak rallies to shoot down Flyers

December 31, 2011

For three quarters, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball team had no pulse.

Then senior Andy Faller hit a jumper from the left wing.

Ba-bump.

And freshman Adam Henderson ventured into a forest of blue and gold trees, grabbed an offensive rebound and stuck it back in the basket.

Ba-bump, ba-bump.

Then Faller drained a 3-pointer.

Ba-bump, ba-bump, ba-bump.

Those three baskets ignited a 19-point fourth quarter as Wapak erased a nine-point deficit and pulled out a 39-35 win over the Marion Local Flyers on Friday at Wapakoneta High School.

BASKETBALL: LCC tops rattled Redskins

December 30, 2011

LIMA — Scoreboard?

It didn’t matter.

Whatever it had to say was secondary.

All that truly mattered was the condition of two young men.

For the record, the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds defeated the Wapakoneta Redskins 62-45 in a non-league varsity boys basketball contest Thursday night at LCC’s Herr Gymnasium.

But a scary sequence just 29 seconds into the second half made the final score an afterthought.

BASKETBALL: Redskins' rally falls apart as Flyers pull out win

December 28, 2011

Fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the Wapakoneta Redskins’ 56-42 loss to the Marion Local Flyers on Tuesday night, Redskins varsity girls basketball coach Rusty Allen still hadn’t emerged from the home lockerroom.

Once he did, Allen knew what the first question was going to be.

“It was the call,” Allen said.

“The call” was what Allen would later describe as a “phantom charge” against senior guard Tasha Helmstetter.

BASKETBALL: Rockets batter Trojans

December 28, 2011

BOTKINS — The Anna Rockets girls basketball team remained undefeated by easily taking care of Botkins in a 58-35 win Tuesday.

Anna jumped out to a big lead early, capturing an 18-7 lead in the first period and never looked back.

“They are a very good team,” Botkins varsity coach Don Mack said. “They get up and down the court in a hurry. We were able to force them into some outside shots but it wasn’t enough.”

Anna’s quickness got them plenty of second shots, as they pulled down 13 offensive rebounds in the contest.

WRESTLING: 'Skins ready for Brecksville tourney

December 26, 2011

Even though the state wrestling tournament is still in the distant future, Wapakoneta wrestlers will get a glimpse of what might await them in March when the Redskins compete in the 51st annual Brecksville Holiday Invitational Tournament on Thursday and Friday.

This year’s edition of the long-standing tournament boasts 37 of some of the best teams in the state of Ohio and one squad from Georgia. Individually 98 of the grapplers entered have state tournament experience with a little more than half of those placing at state in 2011.

BASKETBALL: Tigers topple Trojans

December 24, 2011

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans came ready to play in their 57-43 Shelby County League varsity boys basketball loss to Jackson Center on Friday night at Botkins High School.
The effort was there. The Trojans had a great game plan.
Simply put, the Tigers are just that good.
Botkins stayed close on the boards, losing them by only a 28-27 tote, and only turned the ball over nine times, but it wasn’t enough.
The Tigers answered by converting 14 of their 19 field goals with an assist and only turned the ball over eight times in the win.

TENNIS: Klock headed to UNOH

December 22, 2011

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Makenzie Klock is going to be a Racer netter.

Klock on Tuesday signed a national letter of intent to play tennis for the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers next year.

“It was a good fit for me because it was close to home,” Klock said. “I got a good opportunity.”

As her father and as Wapak varsity girls tennis coach, Mike Klock felt a double dose of pride.

“She’s put a lot of hours on the tennis court. I’m just tickled that she’s taking it to the college level,” he said.

BASKETBALL: 'Skins sink Pirates

December 22, 2011

BLUFFTON — Travis Bertram carved up the Bluffton Pirates defense like a Christmas ham Tuesday night, scoring 26 points to lead the Wapakoneta Redskins to a 52-35 win in a varsity boys basketball contest at Bluffton High School.

The junior forward scored 21 of the Redskins’ first 38 points — including 11 of their 14 first-quarter points — as Wapak pulled away and was never seriously challenged by the 0-5 Pirates.

Bertram was coming off a 28-point performance in Saturday’s 59-57 loss to the St. Henry Redskins.
