Hardin Northern to join Northwest Central Conference

Hardin Northern High School in Dola will become a member of the Northwest Central Conference, NWCC Commissioner David May announced Wednesday night in an email.

“The NWCC is excited to have Hardin Northern join the league and is looking forward to a long term relationship,” May said in the email.

Hardin Northern’s athletic teams, the Polar Bears, will begin competing in the NWCC in all sports minus football starting with the 2014-15 school year.

Warner, Turner to play in all-star game

Two local high school basketball players will appear on the hardwood for another time next week in separate exhibition games.

Wapakoneta senior Sara Warner and Waynesfield-Goshen senior Lidia Turner will play in one of four all-star games hosted by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association District 8 at Elida High School.

The all-star games are comprised of only seniors.

Local swimmers earn Lima area honors

Several local high school student-athletes were honored by the Lima Area Swim Coaches Association for the 2013-14 swimming and diving season.

The associated named its area teams combining all tournament divisions unlike most other postseason awards lists.

For the Wapakoneta Redskins girls team, senior Taylor Law, junior Josie Miller and freshman Jordyn Law were named the top All-Lima Area swimmers for this season.

Former Bengals to play hoops at Boosters fundraiser

An exhibition basketball game featuring former Cincinnati Bengals players and a team of Wapakoneta All-Stars will be the highlight of the Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters’ fundraiser Friday in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

The preliminary Bengals roster made available for this story includes Eric Ball, Dequin Evans, Jojuan Armour, Rodney Heath, Keith Rucker and Jimmy Turner.

The Bengals team will be coached by Denny Gallagher of Buckeye Flooring.

Wapakoneta rallies in finals to win state

The Wapakoneta Redskins rallied in the finals to win the Division I boys bowling state title Friday, becoming the first team in Wapakoneta High School history to capture a state championship.

In the finals, with a state title on the line, Wapakoneta and Olmsted Falls each had their lowest score of the entire state tournament Friday.

Wapakoneta's Warner earns all-district

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Sara Warner earned honors within the Northwest District, as the Associated Press revealed Thursday in its all-district rosters for the 2013-14 high school varsity basketball season.

Warner was chosen as a Division II third-team All-Northwest District selection for this season.

The Redskins’ lone senior starter was the team’s leading scorer at 15.8 points per game.

The 5-foot-9 guard helped lead Wapakoneta to a 14-11 overall record and a district runner-up finish in  2013-14.

OHSAA competitive balance proposal up for vote

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors unanimously approved a new Competitive Balance proposal which will be voted on by its member schools in May this year, the OHSAA announced Tuesday morning.

The plan, recommended to the Board from the 27-member OHSAA Competitive Balance Committee, is similar to the proposal that member schools voted upon last spring.

The proposal deals with how member schools are placed in tournament divisions for team sports the OHSAA sponsors.

Redskins’ Warner 1st-team All-WBL

The Wapakoneta Redskins had four total players earn All-Western Buckeye League honors for the 2013-14 varsity girls basketball season, as the league released the teams Saturday.

The Redskins had one player on each of the four levels of the all-league rosters.

Wapakoneta’s lone senior starter, its leading scorer, guard Sara Warner was a first-team All-WBL selection this season.

Warner was a second-team choice last season as a junior.

Redskins junior post Carly Buzzard was a second-teamer this winter.

Wapakoneta’s Henderson receives honorable mention

The Wapakoneta Redskins had one representative on the All-Western Buckeye League teams for the 2013-14 varsity boys basketball season, as the WBL named its all-league rosters Saturday.

Redskins junior post Adam Henderson was chosen as an honorable mention performer for this season.

The Redskins were 5-18 overall and 2-7 in the WBL under first-year coach Doug Selvey. They finished eighth in the league this winter.

Elida’s Dakota Mathias won the WBL Player of the Year award.

Wapakoneta falls to Bath in district final

PAULDING — The Bath Wildkittens were prolific from 3-point range Saturday, especially Alyssa Manley, who hit all five of her first-half attempts.

The Wildkittens used the cushion they gained from their success with long-range shooting to keep the Wapakoneta Redskins away from the lead as they landed a 61-42 victory Saturday in a Division II girls basketball district final at Paulding High School.

Bath hit nine 3-pointers before halftime, while Manley scored 17 first-half points, all but two coming on 3-pointers.
