NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Cardinals volleyball team picked up their first victory of the season Monday evening as they defeated the Botkins Trojans in three games 25-11, 25-14 and 25-21 in a non-league match played at New Bremen.
“I thought they played well tonight, but we still have things to work on,” Cardinals head coach Theresa Jenkins said. “I thought we were able to roll with the punches pretty well tonight.”
The Wapakoneta boys golf team defended their home course with a 163-191 victory over Shawnee.
Varsity head coach Kenny Wayman said there were some tough conditions Monday that his boys were able to fight through.
“We will take that score and the win today under some tough conditions. It was really windy and some rain involved. The scores were a little high today from both teams,” Wayman said. “However, shooting a 163 today under those conditions, we will take any day.”
The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their volleyball season with a 3-0 win against Sidney Monday night.
Winning the first three sets 25-14, 25-15, 25-18, Varsity head coach Keith Rambin said he was pleased with the way his team played.
“First game of the seaon, you never know what’s in store for the first game of the season,” Rambin said. “I was a little worried about Sidney because I know they had been improving, and they got a new volleyball player this year. I was a little worried.”
BOTKINS - In a game where both teams brought comparable firepower to the front line, it was the little things that made the difference as Botkins opened the season with a 25-9, 25-27, 25-12, 25-16 win over Waynesfield-Goshen Saturday.
Botkins served at a 98 percent clip with 20 aces and passed the ball more efficiently to set up top hitters Logan Pitts and Rachelle Maurer as they found themselves in control most of the time.
WAYNESFIELD— Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football coach Gary Spencer did not keep it secret that the Tigers needed to play mistake-free football to win the season opener against Delphos Jefferson Friday.
They managed to do it for a half, but three costly turnovers in the second half led to their undoing in a 38-17 loss.
