SWIMMING: 'Skins send 9 to districts

February 14, 2012

LIMA — Nine Wapakoneta Redskins varsity swimmers, seven of them in multiple events, advanced to the Division II district meet thanks to their performances in the sectional meet Saturday at the Lima Family YMCA.

The district meet will be held Friday at Bowling Green State University.

Senior Ryan Kremer led the way for the Redskins.  Kremer won the 100 backstroke and is seeded sixth in that event.  He took second in the 100 butterfly, earning the No. 2 seed.

BASKETBALL: Panthers' pressure trips W-G

February 14, 2012

WAYNESFIELD — Every time the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers made a run, the Parkway Panthers had an answer.

Eventually, the Tigers just ran out of runs.

Parkway used it’s full-court defensive pressure to slow down the up-tempo Tigers and hold on for a 66-59 win in a non-league varsity girls basketball game on Seniors Night on Monday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

The Panthers forced 24 W-G turnovers and kept the Tigers from attacking offensively.

WRESTLING: WBL three-peat

February 13, 2012

DEFIANCE — Coming into this season, Wapakoneta varsity coach Jason Rostorfer knew if the Redskins were going to three-peat as Western Buckeye League champions it would take hard work, dedication and a little bit of that Redskin mojo.

Not only did the Redskins have a target coming into this season on their back as the defending champs but they had lost a core of quality seniors to graduation and were not as experienced as past Wapakoneta teams.

BOWLING: Redskins run the table

February 13, 2012

LIMA — Fifteen up, fifteen down.

The Wapakoneta Redskins got big days from Anthony Kennard and Zach Miller and rolled past the previously unbeaten Versailles Tigers on Saturday to wrap up a perfect 15-0 regular season and win the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference title.

Kennard, a senior, rolled individual games of 289 and 259.  Miller, a junior, turned in scores of 267 and 257.

Together, they posted the top four individual rounds of the day among the 16 schools competing at 20th Century Lanes in Lima.

BASKETBALL: Trojans trump Tigers

February 13, 2012

WAYNESFIELD — The Botkins Trojans broke a four-game losing streak with a 74-50 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in a non-league varsity boys basketball matchup Saturday night in Waynesfield.

The Trojans improved to 8-10 overall. The Tigers fell to 6-11.

Intense defensive pressure by the Trojans caused the Tigers to struggle during the first half of play.

W-G got into foul trouble early, with 15 in the first half, helping Botkins rack up easy points. Botkins lead 32-27 at halftime.

BASKETBALL: Cougars sink 'Skins

February 11, 2012

The Van Wert Cougars started out so fast they nearly left skid marks on the floor of the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Van Wert raced out to an early 24-7 lead, withstood Wapak’s lone rally, and posted a 59-44 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday.

The Cougars hit five of their first six shots and finished the quarter 10-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-3 from three-point range.

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans made several runs.

But Anna proved to be just too much as the Rockets cruised to a 73-61 win in a Shelby County League varsity boys basketball game Friday at Botkins High School.

The Trojans briefly took a 20-18 lead early in the second quarter when Tyler Egbert scored from the paint on back-to back trips down the floor and then connected on the second of a pair of free throws.

VAN WERT — The Van Wert Cougars used their clear size advantage to cruise to a 54-39 win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball game Thursday at Van Wert High School.

The game turned in the second quarter when the Cougars outscored Wapak 16-3 to take a 26-11 lead into the lockerroom.

Van Wert held the Redskins without a field goal for a span of 13:36, starting late in the first quarter and extending into the first five minutes of the third.

BASKETBALL: Wapak to face Van Wert

February 9, 2012

Five weeks ago, after a 61-47 loss to the Bath Wildcats, Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball coach Matt Bradley challenged his team to ramp up its defensive effort.

Since that time, a span of seven games, the Redskins have given up no more than 55 points in any game.

They went 2-5 over that stretch, one of the toughest on the schedule with quality opponents such as Defiance, Ottawa-Glandorf and Liberty-Benton.

And it won’t get any easier Friday when veteran coach Dave Froelich brings his Van Wert Cougars to town.
