KENTON — The Wapakoneta Redskins started strong and nearly finished strong.

But they hit a wall in the second quarter and never fully recovered, suffering a 54-46 defeat at the hands of the Kenton Wildcats in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday night at Kenton High School.

Wapak scored just two points in the second quarter on a Travis Bertram jumper at the 4:53 mark.

February 25, 2012

PIQUA — Freshman Mitchell Goubeaux hit the two most important free throws of his high school career in the final seconds as the Botkins Trojans claimed a 50-49 victory over the Fort Loramie Redskins in a Division IV first-round sectional tournament game Friday night at Piqua High School.

The game was tied up 40-40 with 1:25 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.  Redskins senior Tyler Miracle drained a three-point shot to instantly rejuvenate his teammates.

SWIMMING: Miller advances to final

February 24, 2012

CANTON — Two one-hundredths of a second.

That was all the cushion Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Josie Miller needed to advance the finals of the girls 50-yard freestyle in the Division II state swimming meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

It was also all she needed to guarantee her spot in Redskins history as the only Wapakoneta individual swimmer to reach the medal stand at the state meet.

In the preliminary race on Thursday, Miller swam a 24.43 for the eighth fastest time of the day.

SPENCERVILLE — Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls basketball coach Rusty Allen figured all his team needed at halftime was a little pep talk.

So he gave them one.

“There were a few choice words, I guess, in the lockerroom,” Allen said.  “I think they understood what needed to be done.”

It seemed to work.

BASKETBALL: Wapak hoping to keep Kenton winless in WBL

February 23, 2012

“Friendly confines” are not exactly words one might use to describe playing at Kenton High School.

And don’t let their winless 0-8 Western Buckeye League record fool you.

The Wildcats (4-13 overall) aren’t going to be a pushover when the Wapakoneta Redskins visit Friday night for the varsity boys basketball season finale for both teams.

“Kenton is a really dangerous team, despite their record,” Wapak coach Matt Bradley said.

SWIMMING: Kremer, Miller headed to state meet

February 22, 2012

The photographer asked Ryan Kremer for a “game-face” pose.

Kremer clenched his face, looking as tough as he could, for all of three frames before a smile burst onto his face.

He was having too much fun.

And who could blame him?  Prior to his freshman year he spent his winters as a benchwarmer on the basketball team.

His cousins swam at Delaware High School and suggested he take up the sport.  So he did.

Boy, did he.
