BASEBALL: Wapak ACME rips St. Marys

June 8, 2012

ST. MARYS — Aside from an early season wooden bat experiment, Wapakoneta has continued its success into the summer.

“They tried them in batting practice in the spring and they thought they might want to try them in the game,” Wapakoneta ACME coach Willie Sammetinger said, with a chuckle. “Well, they broke $200 worth of bats last night in Elida. They just fractured them. So we’re slowly but surely starting to go back to metal.”

The Redskins are showing theirs early in the ACME season.

It was a true David versus Goliath story.
While twin sisters Ivy and Morgan Horn fell just short of their goal of bringing home a state girls track Division III champion, they undoubtedly impressed onlookers with a strong performance over the weekend.
The pair guided Waynesfield-Goshen to a runner-up finish by scoring 34 points as the only two qualifiers for the team. The pair knew they had a shot at a title against a strong Versailles team, which had 11 runners competing. Versailles nipped the Tigers for the title with 39 points.

COLUMBUS — It wasn’t supposed to happen this year.
But that didn’t make it any easier when it didn’t.
Conventional wisdom from the beginning was that the junior-laden Wapakoneta Redskins were getting primed at a run for the state baseball title in 2013.
Then 2012 happened.
Defending Division II state champions Columbus St. Francis DeSales handed the Redskins a 3-2 defeat and claimed a repeat state championship Saturday at Huntington Park in Columbus.

STATE TRACK: Hayzlett, Horn twins medal

June 1, 2012

COLUMBUS — The conditions weren’t pretty.  And the height wasn’t what she wanted.  But Wapakoneta’s Megan Hayzlett had to be pleased with the result.

The Redskins junior earned a spot on the medal stand, finishing fourth in the high jump during Day 1 of the Division II state track and field meet Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Hayzlett cleared 5-foot-2, three inches below her seed height and personal record of 5-5.

BASEBALL: Wapak bats to be tested by West Holmes

May 30, 2012

Wapakoneta baseball coach Jason Brandt knew pitching wasn’t going to be a problem in the leadup to the 2012 season.

Hitting?  Now that was a question mark.

The Redskins returned just three players with a combined 100 varsity at bats.  The new bat standards only added to the suspense.

As Wapakoneta (24-5) prepares for its first trip to the state baseball tournament, that question has been answered.

The Redskins are batting .320 as a team and have scored 29 runs in five tournament games.

BASEBALL: Crawford, Culver give Wapak 1-2 punch

May 29, 2012

Every championship boxer needs a good 1-2 combination — that right-left combo that leaves opponents staggering.

As the Wapakoneta Redskins head to the state baseball final four on Thursday, junior Johnny Crawford and sophomore Chace Culver have proven to be that combination.

Through five tournament games, Crawford’s left arm and Culver’s right have held opponents to just three runs.

BASEBALL: Redskins state-bound

May 26, 2012

TIFFIN — For the past six years, the Defiance Bulldogs have been the unquestioned kings of the Western Buckeye League.

But not on Friday.

Not with the way Chace Culver pitched.  Not with the way Johnny Crawford, Alex Koch, Dom Campos and Marshall Gerlach played defense.  And not with the way everyone in lineup slots 1 through 9 hit the ball and ran the bases.

It was a virtually flawless performance.

TRACK: Hayzlett triumphs in region

May 26, 2012

LEXINGTON — Megan Hayzlett is heading back to state.

The Wapakoneta Redskins junior won the Division II regional high jump title on Thursday at Lexington High School, earning her second berth to the state meet.

Hayzlett qualified as a freshman before missing the cut her junior year,

Hayzlett cleared 5-5 to edge a familiar foe, Celina Bulldogs’s Lizz Carr for the top spot.

Senior Mallory McDevitt is schedule to compete in the pole vault at 11:30 this morning.

From staff reports

TIFFIN — One streak ended, but another streak continues.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: All-WBL teams announced

May 22, 2012

When you’ve thrown 44 straight scoreless innings, people start to notice.

Wapakoneta Redskins southpaw Johnny Crawford received that notice when the All-Western Buckeye League baseball and softball honors were released Tuesday.

Crawford was the lone Redskins baseball player to be selected to the first team.  The junior pitcher has not given up a run since a 7-2 win over Greenville on Tuesday, March 27.
