Waves win WOAL championship

Scoring 3,236 points over the course of the two-day championship meet, the Wapakoneta Waves swim team brought home the Western Ohio Aquatic League title, and smashed some records along the way.

WOAL is an eight-team league that also includes teams from Ada, Bluffton, Van Wert, Kenton, the Sherwood and Westside swim clubs and the Shawnee Country Club. This year’s final meet was held at Kenton.

Ryan Schneider, 14, set a new meet record in the boys 13-14 50-meter butterfly with a finals time of 28.52. The previous record was 28.83, set in 1993.

Hayzlett settling in with W-G Tigers

WAYNESFIELD — Jack Hayzlett is doing something he set out to do since high school: be a head coach for a high school basketball program.

That was his intention when he attended The Ohio State University to become a teacher as a career.
It never came to fruition at the time, but he now has the chance.

Hayzlett, a Wapakoneta resident, was hired in May to be the varsity boys basketball head coach for Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

Six combine to shut down Crestview

June 13, 2014

Wapakoneta sent six different pitchers to the mound, and, collectively, they shut down Crestview in a 4-1 win Thursday in ACME baseball action at Wapakoneta High School.

The hosts’ pitchers allowed three hits and five baserunners in Crestview’s seven at-bats, and Wapakoneta relied on a four-run third for its offense.

Wapakoneta was needing to get certain pitchers some work heading into its tournament in Defiance starting Saturday.

Football scholarship program created; donations sought

A scholarship program has been created for future football players at Wapakoneta High School under first-year head coach Travis Moyer.

In a letter to potential donors, Moyer says, “Wapakoneta has identified a community service project that is meaningful to its school and community.”

The letter states “this scholarship is to commend players for their 4 years of participation in the Wapakoneta Varsity Football program and promote higher level of education beyond high school.”

Bryan gets past Wapakoneta with 2 runs in 7th

TIFFIN — The Bryan Golden Bears had been on the verge of breaking through for a big inning all game Thursday. The Wapakoneta Redskins, meanwhile, were thirsting for chances to score all game long.

In the seventh inning, finally, the Bears broke through to unlock a 1-1 tie.

Bryan tallied two runs in the top of the seventh inning to get past the Redskins in a high school baseball Division II, Region 6 semifinal at Heminger Field hosted by Tiffin University.

Redskins score 3 in 7th to edge Bath

BLUFFTON — For the second time in three days, walking Chandler Kaeck to face Chace Culver proved to be unwise for Wapakoneta’s opponent in the district tournament.

Culver delivered his second straight eventual game-winning hit with the bases-loaded, as he notched an RBI single for the Redskins’ third run of the seventh inning Saturday, giving his team a 5-4 lead after trailing by two entering their final at-bat.

Wapakoneta gets past Celina on Culver’s double

BLUFFTON — Wapakoneta senior Chace Culver didn’t take too kindly to Celina intentionally walking the hitter in front of him to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning of Thursday’s Division II district semifinal.

“I was kind of insulted, to be honest with you, that they were going to walk to get to me,” Culver said. “I really wanted to get the hit after that.”

Redskins rally twice to beat Napoleon

The Wapakoneta Redskins scored in every inning of their tournament game Saturday, and they needed every bit of those runs in their comeback win.

The Redskins overcame two separate four-run deficits against the visiting Napoleon Wildcats during a 10-8 victory Saturday in a Division II high school softball sectional final at Wapakoneta High School.

Redskins coach Bill Sammons explained what he felt was the reason his team rallied for a win Saturday, as Wapak trailed after Napoleon’s at-bat in each of the first four innings.

Redskins rally in 6th inning to beat Fostoria

The Wapakoneta Redskins finally put one solid inning together in their final at-bat to notch a come-from-behind win Thursday in their first tournament game of the 2014 season.

Although they committed five defensive errors, the Redskins held the visiting Fostoria Redmen scoreless the final four innings before tallying three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

Covington tops Botkins in 12 innings

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans fell short in a marathon tournament game Monday.

The Trojans were defeated 13-11 by the Covington Buccaneers in a Division IV high school baseball sectional semifinal at Botkins Community Park.

Knotted at 9-9 after seven innings, both teams scored twice in the eighth and went scoreless for three straight innings.

Covington took the lead for good in the top of the 12th inning.
